Get in touch and stay in touch

It's hard to maintain a healthy perspective and maintain the effort needed to beat depression on your own. At the same time, the nature of depression makes it difficult for people to seek help. When you're depressed, you tend to withdraw and isolate, so even connecting with close family and friends can be difficult.

  • Reach out to those who make you feel safe and cared for.

  • Face-to-face communication is preferred.

  • Even if you don't feel like it, make an effort to socialize.

  • Find ways to support others.

  • Take care of pets.

  • Join a depression support group.

Do something that makes you feel good

In order to overcome depression, you have to do things that make you relaxed and happy. These are the things you can do to empower yourself every day. This includes following a healthy lifestyle, learning how to manage stress, setting limits on what you can do, and scheduling fun activities into your day.

Action

Exercise is a powerful weapon against depression and one of the most important tools you have for recovery. To get the maximum benefit, you should exercise at least 30 minutes a day. These exercises include anything you want to do or anything that makes you feel good. These exercises don't have to be done all at once; you can break them down into sections that suit your needs.

Challenge negative thoughts

Do you often feel powerless? There's nothing you can do about it when bad things come? Your situation is hopeless? Depression can make everything negative, including the way you see yourself and your expectations for the future. Think of other possible consequences or causes that might make things turn out differently than you hoped.

“What they don’t tell you about depression is that sometimes it feels a lot less like sadness and a lot more like the emotional equivalent of watching paint dry.”
