What is Depression?

Depression is not the same as normal sadness. Depression is a feeling of hopelessness and despair that lasts more than a few days. Depression is a mental health problem. There is no shame in having depression. Many people feel afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Some people turn a blind eye to their own symptoms and end up suffering only for themselves. Contrary to popular misconception, depression is neither inevitable nor a weakness of a person's character. People with depression often feel this way because they feel guilty about their condition. Depression is a real health problem but can be sought if the sufferer is aware of it and knows how to get help. It can be treated with physical therapy or medication. If untreated, depression can lead to self-harm or suicide.
